Asia Pacific: Windows Phone 7 handsets to hit end-October 2010

SINGAPORE--Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system (OS) will be officially launched in Singapore, Australia and New Zealand on Oct. 21 alongside handsets from HTC, LG Electronics, Dell Computer and Samsung.
Tang Tuan Choon, senior marketing manager of enterprise mobility for Microsoft Asia's mobile communications business, disclosed that Redmond will be bringing the OS to 10 countries in the Asia-Pacific market. Singapore, Australia and New Zealand will see Microsoft-funded marketing activities to mark the official launch, while availability in the other Asia-Pacific markets will depend on local operators and handset makers.

Speaking to ZDNet Asia at the sidelines of a media briefing here Tuesday, Tang said the three markets were selected as initial launch destinations because of their market maturity and "very good" adoption of smartphones. In addition, he noted that mobile operators in these markets play a major role in the distribution of handsets, particularly in the way they offer consumers subsidies when purchasing mobile devices to drive uptake.

The three markets are also predominantly English-speaking, a factor that is in line with the company's strategy to launch the phones in countries that speak English, French, German, Italian and Spanish, he added.

That said, Tang revealed that the remaining seven Asia markets will see the deployment of Windows Phone 7-based phones "very soon" after the first three markets receive theirs. The 10 Asia markets will be joined by 20 other countries worldwide to usher the mobile OS into the industry, the company stated.

Microsoft said handset makers and telcos in Asia-Pacific markets such as Taiwan, Malaysia and Hong Kong will be bringing in Windows Phone 7-based smartphones to their respective markets at the end of October too, but Redmond will not be involved in their launch activities.

Strong telco support
In Singapore, Microsoft will collaborate "strongly" with Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) to bring handsets from partnering phonemakers such as HTC, LG, Samsung and Dell to consumers, said Jessica Tan, managing director of Microsoft Singapore, who was also at the briefing.

She noted that SingTel will be the first operator to carry Windows Phone 7-based smartphones come Oct. 21, but added that the other two local operators--StarHub and M1--will also distribute these phones at a later date. However, specific launch dates for both operators have yet to be announced.

The SingTel partnership is significant in that Microsoft will leverage the carrier's AMPed social music service to plug a current gap in its Windows Phone 7 ecosystem--the ability to purchase music via Zune.

According to Tan, Microsoft's Zune music purchasing platform will not be made available to Singapore or "many of the other Asia-Pacific countries", and there are no plans at the moment to bring the service to more markets in the region.

"It is not to say that we can't support Zune here in Asia, but due to the complex copyright and licensing environment here, these issues pose a challenge for us," she noted.

She pointed to AMPed as a workaround, adding that Windows Phone users can turn to the SingTel platform for their music needs.

Tang noted, however, that the Zune software will still be the "synchronization platform" for users to manage their apps and media content, as well as for Microsoft and telcos to push out software updates--similar to Apple's iTunes platform.

Mac users will likely have to make use of their Boot Camp feature to run the Windows OS on their laptops and desktops in order to access Zune as the software is not supported by the Mac OS, he added.

Yuen Kuan Moon, SingTel's executive vice president of consumer group, also pointed to the carrier's MobileTV video streaming service as another app that will populate the Windows Marketplace on the Oct. 21 launch date. This will provide content such as live broadcast of Barclay's Premier League matches to users on their mobile phones, Yuen added.

Besides SingTel's own apps, Tan added that 20 local apps will be available on the Windows Marketplace at launch. Windows Phone users will also have access to international apps.

Chris Chin, developer marketing director for mobile communications at Microsoft Asia-Pacific and Greater China, told ZDNet Asia that while no global developers are currently working specifically on producing content for Windows Phone 7, there are about 2,000 developers in the Asia-Pacific region creating software for the platform.

Chin, who is responsible for app development in Asia-Pacific, said he is noticing a "strong momentum" among Microsoft's existing base of .Net developers as well as a "loyal" group of Windows Mobile developers working on the Windows Phone platform.

He added that mobile developers building on other platforms have also been migrating to the Windows Phone 7 ecosystem due to the "frustrations" they have experience while working on Google's Android or Apple's iOS platforms.

"These are developers that have found competing platforms awkward due to fragmentation, tight controls and an approval process that's not transparent," noted Chin.

LG parades Optimus 7
One of the first to partner Microsoft after the decision to develop the mobile OS, LG also took the opportunity to launch its Windows Phone 7-based LG Optimus 7 smartphone here on Tuesday.

Nam Young Woo, president and CEO of LG Electronics Asia, said the company has been working closely with Microsoft since 2009 to come up with a handset that is optimized for the Windows OS. The effort saw 250 and 120 engineers from LG and Microsoft, respectively, collaborating to design the smartphone, Nam said.

According to Arthur Huang, COO of LG Electronics Singapore, Optimus 7 boasts features such as LG's ScanSearch augmented reality application, which derives its capability from the Windows OS's digital compass--a feature that only LG has access to.

The LG handset will be available in Singapore and Australia by end-October, while India will be the next in line to welcome the device at the end of December, Huang added.

Asked how the new Windows OS fits into LG's overall mobile strategy, Chang Ma, the Korean company's vice president of marketing strategy, told ZDNet Asia that as OS has just been rolled out, it is "too early" to say how many of its handsets will be powered by Windows Phone 7.

"We will continue to evaluate our partnership with Microsoft and keep pace with the company's developments," Ma said.

He also pointed to the company's Android-powered Optimus One, which was launched last month, as an indication the company is not just focusing on the new OS. By tapping both OSes, LG customers will benefit from the choices available to them, he added.

Besides LG, OEM partners Samsung, HTC and Dell also announced they will have handsets powered by Windows Phone 7 at the launch date or slightly after, announced Microsoft's Tan.

HTC to launch 5 windows phone 7 smartphones

Taiwan handset maker HTC Corp. has launched five smartphone models using Microsoft Corp.'s revamped version of its mobile operating system, demonstrating a strong endorsement of Microsoft's struggling mobile business.

Peter Chou, HTC's chief executive, said earlier the company plans to introduce the HTC 7 Surround, HTC 7 Mozart, HTC 7 Pro, HTC 7 Trophy and HTC HD7 models with different carriers in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

AT&T Inc. will carry HTC 7 Surround; T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG, will sell HTC HD7; and Sprint Nextel Corp. will sell HTC 7 Pro. The models will work on code division multiple access technology.
HTC 7 Mozart and HTC 7 Trophy will be carried mainly by European and Asian operators, the company said. The two models will work on wideband CDMA technology.
Click here to find out more!Mozart will be carried by Orange Mobile, a unit of France Telecom, in France, the U.K., Switzerland and Spain, by Deutsche Telekom AG in Germany, and by CSL Ltd., Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Ltd. and China Mobile Hong Kong Co. in Hong Kong. Vodaphone Group PLC will carry Trophy in Germany, France, Spain, the U.K., Austria and Switzerland.

HTC has adopted Microsoft's popular gaming software, Xbox Live, on the five models.

HTC declined to provide more details of its marketing strategy or give a forecast for the shipments of the new devices. But UBS analyst Arthur Hsieh said HTC expects to ship 2 million units of the Windows-based models by the end of this year.

HTC is the world's largest producer of mobile phones that use Microsoft's Windows operating system by shipments, but it has gained popularity in the U.S. and Europe for its early adoption of Google Inc.'s Android operating system.

The company recently unveiled two new smartphones, HTC Desire HD and HTC Desire Z, that use the Android operating system, and Chou said HTC expects to ship more than 1 million of each model by the end of this year.

He said HTC shipped more than 16 million handsets globally in the nine months ended Sept. 30.

In the past year, smartphones using Microsoft's operating system have met strong competition from Apple Inc.'s  iPhone

Pictures: Windows Phone 7 launch

Some of the pictures of todays Windows Phone 7 launch event.

How to: sell Windows Phone 7. Microsoft plans

Microsoft hopes to sell its new Windows Phone 7 as something that complements one's life, rather than looks to take it over.

In contrast to ad campaigns that focus on the cell phone and its powerful hardware and software, Microsoft's forthcoming advertising campaign focuses on how easy the new operating system makes it to get information at a glance and then return to what one is doing.

A teaser spot, which will air later this month, shows a sea of people all staring at their phones oblivious to other people or to their surroundings, which include a fallen bicycle and a car that has crashed into a pole.
"It's time for a phone to save us from our phones," reads the text at the end of the minute-long, dialogue-free spot which ends with the Windows Phone logo and the November 8 U.S. launch date.

Microsoft is showing the first crop of Windows Phone 7 devices at an event in New York today, but the phones themselves won't be available until later in the month in Europe and next month in the United States.
Another TV ad shows people engrossed in their phone in different ways, including a man walking down the wedding aisle while tapping away on his phone and a father playing catch with his son while texting. One of the most, um, colorful moments occurs when a man in the bathroom drops his phone in a urinal, then picks it up and continues about his activity.

"Really?" inquires the guy next to him.

In addition to the more generic teaser ads, there are follow-up spots that focus more on the phone's features, such as so-called Live Tiles on the home screen that offer information at a glance as well as the ability to keep tabs on people via Facebook and Twitter. Advertising in the United Kingdom will start later this week, while the U.S. teaser spot is slated to begin showing in late October.

"Our job here is to be a disruptor," said David Webster, Microsoft's chief marketing strategist. "Our job out of the gate is to cause some friction, cause some people to re-examine the category."

Although he said that Windows Phone will have plenty of games, video apps, and other features, Webster said that is not what the company wants to tout to the masses.

"We're highlighting the moments where that's not OK and the wrong phone design can encourage you to be more antisocial than you should," he said.

Webster wouldn't say how much the company plans to spend on the campaign, but did note it will be larger than any previous phone effort.

The ads were done by Crispin Porter and Bogusky, the same firm that has done Microsoft's "I'm a PC" spots, as well as the "Windows 7 was my idea" campaign.

"They really understand the Windows brand and its voice," Webster said. "There's some DNA behind it that's common."

Although Windows Phone is the main brand in the ads, the Microsoft brand will also be featured. While that may sound obvious, until this year, not all Microsoft products included the company's overall brand.

However, that is changing with this holiday's push for Xbox, Windows, and Windows Phone.

Microsoft is hoping to build on what Webster said is an already valuable brand that lends credibility, even in areas like search where Microsoft is a challenger.

Of course, Microsoft also spent a fortune marketing its Kin, a phone that was pulled after two months on the market. While costly from a financial perspective, Webster doesn't think that the failure of the Kin will hurt the launch of Windows Phone 7.

"I don't think that will weigh too heavily on anyone," Webster said. "I think the Kin work was very specifically targeted. It was actually aimed at a fairly distinct audience."

Xbox Games Titles Included for holidays on Windows Phone 7

First Windows Phone 7 Games Announced, Xbox Titles Included
At Gamescom 2010, Microsoft announced the first wave of Xbox LIVE game titles coming to Windows Phone 7 this holiday.
Months before the launch of Windows Phone 7,( Monday Oct 12,2010) Microsoft is offering a glimpse of a mobile gaming experience that aims to stand apart.

The integration of Xbox LIVE, together with a quality launch lineup, will set Windows Phone 7 apart from its competitors, according to the Windows Phone 7 team at Microsoft.
The integration of Xbox LIVE, together with a quality launch lineup, will set Windows Phone 7 apart from its competitors, according to the Windows Phone 7 team at Microsoft.

Today at Gamescom 2010, the worlds largest gaming conference underway in Cologne, Germany, Microsoft announced the first wave of video games that will be available for Windows Phone 7 at launch or shortly after. The first 50 titles a mix of new and familiar games that target both the casual and hardcore gamer are just a sampling of what will ship this holiday, said Kevin Unangst, senior director of PC and mobile gaming. But the list conveys the wide range of video games that will be available on Windows Phone 7.

The company also announced that its Windows Phone 7 games will be closely linked with Xbox LIVE, and said that gamers will be able to extend the experience of some of their favorite console franchises to the phone.

Were really approaching this as we would a console, so we have to deliver the breadth of games and the quality people expect from Xbox, Unangst said. He said thats why starting out with a strong portfolio of games is so important. To have this quantity and quality of games committed this far ahead of launch, with even more to come, is a statement of support that says Windows Phone 7 will be a big success, he said.
Unangst: Starting with the announcement today, were going to bring a set of high -quality games and experiences, all using Xbox LIVE, to bear at the launch of the Windows Phone 7.
Unangst: Starting with the announcement today, were going to bring a set of high -quality games and experiences, all using Xbox LIVE, to bear at the launch of the Windows Phone 7.

Among the first titles are familiar casual games like Bejeweled and Uno as well as new ones like Game Chest - a collection of card and board games. Those games should appeal to the target audience thats all ready to buy a Windows Phone 7, Unangst said.

Microsofts mobile gaming portfolio also will appeal to Xboxs millions of gamers, he said. Popular games like CarneyVale: Showtime will be ready to play this fall when the phone launches, for example. But going beyond bringing Xbox games over to Windows Phone 7, Microsoft is building mobile experiences that connect with and complement the Xbox 360 experience, Unangst said.

As announced previously, Windows Phone 7 will connect with Xbox LIVE, meaning that mobile users can earn achievements on-the-go, update their avatar and keep track of their gamerscore. At Gamescom, Microsoft announced several familiar Xbox titles that will offer companion experiences on Windows Phone 7. Halo: Waypoint an Xbox LIVE hub where Halo fans can go to watch videos and engage with the Halo community, also will be available on the phone, for example. And games like Crackdown 2: Project Sunburst will be mobile companion games that offer different gameplay than the console versions, but will be set in the same universe. In addition, hits from Xbox LIVE Arcade like Rocket Riot also will make their exclusive mobile debut on Windows Phone 7.

Unangst said the integration of Xbox Live, together with a quality launch lineup, will be what sets Windows Phone 7 apart from its competitors. Consumers clearly look to gaming as an expected experience on their mobile phone now, and were going to take that expectation and that delivery up to a different level, he said.
Mobile gaming is rapidly becoming big business. Internal Microsoft research shows that 80 percent of gamers in the US have or will purchase a smartphone this year, and a quarter of what gamers spend on games is spent on mobile gaming. According to research firm In-Stat, mobile gaming is already a billion-dollar industry in the U.S. and will continue to climb.
At Gamescom 2010, Microsoft announced that its Windows Phone 7 games will be closely linked with Xbox LIVE.
At Gamescom 2010, Microsoft announced that its Windows Phone 7 games will be closely linked with Xbox LIVE.

Thats why getting gaming right on the new mobile platform is important to the success of Windows Phone 7, said Greg Sullivan, senior product manager with the Mobile Communications Marketing Group. Depending on how you measure it, games are one of the biggest application categories in the smartphone space," Sullivan said. Thats one reason were so excited about the Game hub broadly and the Xbox LIVE integration in particular.

Of course, Windows Phone 7 will have plenty of room for non-Xbox LIVE titles, and consumers can still have a great gaming experience on the phone even if they never plan on owning a console, he added.

Still, because of the Xbox draw, Microsoft expects game developers to take advantage of Windows Phone 7s gaming capacity in a way that extends the Xbox LIVE network and creates powerful new scenarios, Sullivan said. I think folks are starting to think this through and consider the realm of the possible with gaming when you start to extend the leading gaming network of Xbox LIVE out to potentially millions of mobile devices and you have a platform that lets developers create great experiences that span the Xbox and the phone, he said.

Unangst said he gets questions about how Microsoft will compete with the iPhone and other platforms that have been around for a while. His response is that Microsoft is following the same playbook that worked for Xbox 360 a laser-focus on great games.

Like it did with its console, Microsoft is actively managing its mobile game portfolio and making sure the best titles will be available on Windows Phone 7. The company is working with third party developers as well as bringing its own resources; Microsoft Game Studios (MGS) now has a dedicated group tasked with extending the best console games onto Windows Phone 7, and delivering all new mobile-specific games.

Weve done this over and over, and we know how to launch a gaming platform, he said. Starting with the announcement today, were going to bring a set of high-quality games and experiences to bear at the launch of the Windows Phone 7.

Windows Phone 7 launch coverage. Monday Oct 11,2010

Title: Windows Phone 7 launch
Date: Monday October 11, 2010
Time: 9:30AM EDT

More than three years in the making, Microsoft is at long last set to show off Windows Phone 7 on Monday.

What is debuting is actually Microsoft's second crack at Windows Phone 7. The first was a more enterprise-focused device that was scrapped about a year and a half ago when Microsoft decided it needed a much more consumer-friendly approach in order to take on the iPhone and Google's Android.

First shown at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona early this year, Windows Phone 7 is now finalized and will start showing up in devices that go on sale later this month in Europe and early next month in the U.S. (though it won't run on Sprint or Verizon until next year).

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, along with AT&T Mobility and Consumer President Ralph De La Vega, have scheduled a press conference for 9:30 a.m. EDT on Monday.

T-Mobile is also set to show its Windows Phone 7 lineup later on Monday and we'll have plenty of coverage from both events.

T-Mobile to offer new HTC phones with windows phone 7

(Reuters) - T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom (DTEGn.DE), said it will support Windows Phone 7 software and plans to reveal details of phones based on the Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) software at an event on Oct 11.

AT&T Inc (T.N), the No. 2 U.S. mobile service, also plans to make an announcement about phones based on the Microsoft software at the event hosted by Microsoft.

New Windows 7 phones are expected in stores in time for the holiday shopping season.

At the event, T-Mobile USA, the U.S. No. 4 mobile network, is expected to announce a Windows Phone 7 device made by Taiwan's HTC Corp (2498.TW), according to a person close to the matter who asked not to be named.

HTC is a long-time Microsoft partner but has recently been heavily focused on making phones based on Google Inc's (GOOG.O) Android software. It said it would make new Microsoft phones, but declined to give any further details.

A T-Mobile USA official also declined to give details.
The launch of Microsoft's new phone software is being seen a test of the world's largest software company's ability to catch up with rivals Apple Inc (AAPL.O) and Google, which have vaulted past it in the fast-growing market for smartphones.

Microsoft Corp. will formally unveil a lineup of smartphones using the revamped version of its mobile operating system on Oct. 11, and AT&T Inc. will begin offering them four weeks later, according to people familiar with the launch plans.

The launch--centered in New York with satellite events elsewhere--is crucial for Microsoft, which has been battered by Apple Inc.'s iPhone and a wave of flashier consumer friendly devices using Google Inc.'s Android mobile software. The software makeover represents one of the software giant's last chances to remain relevant in the mobile world.

"This is critical to Microsoft's overall business," said Avi Greengart, who follows consumer electronic devices for research firm Current Analysis."They are being badly outflanked right now by their competitors."

Microsoft will receive the marketing support of AT&T, which will be the initial exclusive U.S. carrier to sell the Windows Phone 7 smartphones. AT&T plans to sell the devices the week of Nov. 8. Initially, the telco will offer three handsets--one each made by Samsung Electronics Co., LG Electronics Inc., and HTC Corp.--as it looks to diversify its portfolio of mobile devices beyond the iPhone.

It has been a long, hard stumble for Microsoft, which boasted a strong early presence in smartphones. The company's Windows Mobile operating system was commonly found in the smartphones used by the corporate crowd only a few years ago. But the emergence of the iPhone in 2007 forced other smartphone platforms to step up their game, and Microsoft failed to materially update its software and quickly fell behind.

In the past year, Microsoft's share of the smartphone operating system market has nearly halved, falling to 5% in the second quarter from 9.3% a year ago, according to Gartner.

Android has since replaced Microsoft as the mobile operating system of choice for handset vendors that don't already have their own proprietary software. Motorola Inc.(MOT), for instance, has built its turnaround on its early embrace of Android. And while Samsung, LG and HTC have committed to making Windows Phone 7 devices, all of them have a much larger presence in Android.

Microsoft's own attempt to create a youth-oriented mobile device earlier this year fizzled.

Windows Phone 7 to launch in Europe on October 21st, in the US on November 8th,

Contrary to the prevailing rumor that suggests Microsoft will launch Windows Phone 7 at a NYC event on October 11th, Paul Thurrott is reporting that Microsoft will launch its latest mobile OS on November 8th in the US. Though he confirms that there is a NYC event slated for October 11th, it is an annual event that is not associated with Windows Phone 7.

This revelation comes hot on the heels of another rumor that surfaced today and suggests the European launch of Windows Phone 7 is slated for October 21st. Supposedly Microsoft is planning launch events around Europe to promote Windows Phone 7, including one in London that will feature a local radio station. These events will coincide with the retail availability of Windows Phone 7 handsets across Europe.

Despite some confusion over the October 11th event, the launch of Windows Phone 7 is shaping up nicely. The European launch in October is fast approaching and we have seen a handful of phones including the LG E900 and the HTC HD7. The American launch is as exciting with the HD7 possibly landing on T-Mobile and the HTC Mondrian and more launching with AT&T. Anyone planning on purchasing a Windows Phone 7 handset when they finally make their debut?
