Philippines: Google launches free mobile Internet with Globe Telecom.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jess.

Philippines: Google launches free mobile Internet with Globe Telecom.

Google has launched a service in conjunction with Filipino mobile operator Globe Telecom that will allow free Internet access geared around Google products such as search, Gmail and its Google + social network.

"It's aimed at the next billion users of the Internet, many of whom will be in emerging markets and encounter the Internet first on a mobile phone , without ever owning a PC," AbdelKarim Mardini, product manager for Google, told Reuters.

Google says the service known as Free Zone will be rolled out to other markets soon.

Globe Telecom is the second-largest operator in the Philippines with an estimated 33 million subscribers, though many only use their phones for voice calls and SMS.

According to Reuters, users are able to access websites that show up in Google's search results for free, but any website outside those results would prompt an invitation to subscribe to one of the mobile operator's data plans.

Although smartphones sales are rising rapidly in the Philippines they account for less than a quarter of all devices and Google said Free Zone would work with basic phones.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jess.

Google to unveil new devices on October 29 at N.Y. event

Google has sent out invitations for an Android event on October 29, 10 a.m ET in New York.

Despite The playground is open, suggest the event will have to do with Google Play, the recently rebranded Android Market, rumors around the web are saying that Google has distributed an internal video that details and confirms speculations about what might be revealed at the upcoming event.

The video reportedly discusses the launch of a 32GB version of the Nexus 7 tablet, as well as one with 3G support. It also indicates Google is working with manufacturer Samsung to release a 10-inch tablet called "Nexus 10" that will run Android 4.2 ("Key Lime Pie"), and a Nexus smartphone manufactured by LG.

The new Android 4.2 mobile operating system will include a panoramic camera option and tablet sharing capabilities, which would allow more than one user to access the device with his own set of email and apps , similar to how a family or business can switch between user settings on a Windows computer.

Google's new Samsung tablet is reportedly being filed under the name "Codename Manta." The device is expected to have a 25601600 pixel resolution and 300ppi, which is greater than the iPad's 264ppi.

Meanwhile, the 4.7-inch Nexus smartphone manufactured by LG is said to tout a quad-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm APQ8064 Snapdragon processor, a 1280x768 display, 2GB of RAM and 16GB storage.

The event will be live streamed on Youtube/Android

New Google for Entrepreneurs.Video.

New Google for Entrepreneurs.Video.

From the Google Blog:

Startups and entrepreneurs have the power to build technologies and creative solutions that transform the world and move us forward. Innovation is happening everywhere: There are approximately 400 million entrepreneurs across 54 countries, and 69 million early-stage entrepreneurs offering new products and services. As Google turns 14 this month, were celebrating this creative spirit and officially launching Google for Entrepreneurs, the umbrella for our several dozen programs and partnerships around the world that support startups and entrepreneurs.

Our focus is threefold:
  1. Partnerships with strong organizations that serve entrepreneurs in local communities
  2. Google-led programs to bring our teams and our tools directly to entrepreneurs
  3. Placing relevant Google tools in the hands of startups as they are getting off the ground and ready to scale

Were already on a roll, with current projects ranging from support for the annual journey of entrepreneurship through India by train, to partnering with a number of accelerator and incubator programs around the world, like iHub in Kenya and Le Camping in France. And, this week, were rolling out our newest partnership: teaming up with Women 2.0 to bring their Founder Friday events to more cities. These events bring together current and aspiring female entrepreneurs once a month to connect with mentors and one another to build community. Were partnering to launch Founder Fridays in Detroit, New Orleans, Sao Paulo and Moscow over the next year.

To celebrate both our birthday and the spirit of entrepreneurship thats helped get us where we are today, we are hosting our first annual Google for Entrepreneurs Week, which will bring together more than 3,000 entrepreneurs and Googlers around the world. We kicked off over the weekend with a Startup Weekend event hosted at the Google Ventures Startup Lab in Mountain View, Calif., where Bay Area entrepreneurs came together to create their own startups in 54 hours. Over the course of the next week, Googlers in 28 cities across 13 countries will be hosting an event in their communities to bring their passion and expertise to local entrepreneurs. Were teaming with a number of partners to make this happen, including the Idea Village in New Orleans, Communitech in Waterloo, Tetuan Valley in Wroclaw, the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship in Johannesburg and the Council Bluffs Chamber of Commerce in Iowa.

For more on these existing programs and to stay connected on upcoming events, visit google.com/entrepreneurs and follow us on G+.

Google updates Street View app. Adds more countries.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jess.

Google updates Street View app. Adds more countries.

In a bid to trump its fiercest rival in the smartphone space, Google is launching what it claims is its biggest ever update to its Street View application.

Apple launched its long-awaited iPhone 5 handset in September this year, but the firm attracted criticism for its custom-built Maps application, part of its iOS6 platform.

The Google Maps app was dropped from the platform in favour of the app, but even Apple CEO Tim Cook conceded that users are better off using rival services, and recently apologised for the glitches in the Cupertino firms own offering.

Google has opted not to release a new version of Google Maps for the iOS platform yet though, and is focusing on developing it further in an effort to convert Apple users to its Android platform.

It is adding Street View coverage in Macau, Singapore, Sweden, the US, Thailand, Taiwan, Italy, Great Britain, Denmark, Norway and Canada. In addition, the firm is doubling its special collections, which are in-depth maps covering areas of interest such as university campuses, zoos and malls. It has launched new special collections in South Africa, Japan, Spain, France, Brazil and Mexico.

Street View is a useful resource when youre planning a route or looking for a destination, but it can also magically transport you to some of the worlds picturesque and culturally significant landmarks, said Ulf Spitzer, Street View program manager at Google. We hope you enjoy taking a virtual stroll around some of the worlds beautiful places.

LG Google Nexus quad-core 2GB RAM coming in November.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jess.

LG Google Nexus quad-core 2GB RAM coming in November.

LGs Nexus: quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB of RAM, 1280768  resolution display, on-screen soft keys, 8-megapixel camera, 8GB and 16GB internal storage models (no microSD card slot), non-removable battery and wireless charging.

In addition to the purported spec leak, MoDaCo says that its also possible that other manufacturers might be building Nexus smartphones as well. That jibes well with news that Google could split its Nexus smartphones among numerous handset makers. LGs Nexus smartphone will reportedly be released in mid-November.

Google market value overtakes Microsoft.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jess.

Google market value overtakes Microsoft.

Google has overtaken Microsoft for the first time in terms of market value, becoming the third-most valuable company on public markets behind Exxon Mobil and Apple.

Based on closing prices yesterday, Google's shares ended the day to value the company at US$249.1 billion, nearly US$2 billion more than Microsoft. Google is in an escalating arms race with Apple (US$628 billion), the next company in Googles sights, after Apple launched its own less-than-stellar maps application that replaced a Google-powered version on the iPhone.

Apple goes after Google`s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jess.

Apple goes after Google`s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Apple said it plans to extend its claims of infringement to include Samsung products released since the last case management conference in May. Having evaluated the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet and the OS used in it, Android 4.1, Apple said it believes both infringe on the patents at issue, and intends to amend its suit accordingly.

Samsung Electronics intends to drag the iPhone 5 into an ongoing patent lawsuit with Apple, according to documents filed with a U.S. court.

The companies revealed their plans in a joint case management conference statement filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose Division, on Wednesday.

How Google is going to react to Apple`s claim against Samsung use of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS, remains to be seen.

Google acquired top iOS based photo app Snapseed, challenging Facebook`s Instagram

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jess.

Google Inc  has acquired a top iOS based photo app, Snapseed, in a bid to challenge Facebook Inc s Instagram, as Google+ subscriber base and monthly active users soar. According to recent reports, , the search engine giant has decided to enhance its social platform, Google+s, competitive edge as it tries to challenge Facebooks dominance in the social networking business, by acquiring the top iOS photo app.

According to reliable sources Snapseed deem as the the best app ever built by the German Software company. This week we also hit an important milestoneover 400,000,000 people have upgraded to Google+. It was only a year ago that we opened public sign-up, and we couldnt have imagined that so many people would join in just 12 months. While Google+ is all about creating a better experience across Google, its also a destination. And here too, Im happy to report that we have just crossed 100,000,000 monthly active users on Google+ (plus.google.com and mobile app).

Google finally responds,Court of appeals to review infringement and validity of patent claims.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Google finally responds to Apple vs Samsung, US California court veredict. Court of appeals to review infringement and validity of patent claims.

Google statement:

The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don't relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the US Patent Office. The mobile industry is moving fast and all players — including newcomers — are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don't want anything to limit that.
Bottom Line: There is no final word yet to the last week US California court veredict to Samsung pay 1B billion dollars to Apple , it could be overturned.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Google is buying Frommer's brand of travel guides from publisher John Wiley & Sons Inc.

Google Inc., which bought the Zagat restaurant review service in September, plans to use Frommer's guides to hotels and destinations around the world to complement the Zagat listings.

Google is buying Frommer's from publisher John Wiley & Sons Inc. in a deal that includes John Wiley's other travel-related businesses. Financial terms were not disclosed in Monday's announcement.

Frommer's got its start in 1957 with the publication of Arthur Frommer's "Europe on $5 a Day." Frommer's now publishes more than 300 guidebooks and runs the Frommers.com website.

John Wiley is trying to sell off a number of businesses that no longer fit with its long-term focus on professionals and education.

In addition to travel, businesses up for sale include the company's culinary, general interest, nautical, pets, crafts, Webster's New World and CliffsNotes businesses.

John Wiley, which is based in Hoboken, N.J., says it plans to use the proceeds from the sales to support growth opportunities in its other businesses.

USA: Taiwan's National Cheng Kung University sues Apple over voice-to-text technology (SIRI).

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Nckulogo.jpg

USA: Taiwan's National Cheng Kung University sues Apple over  voice-to-text technology (SIRI), examining Google`s and Microsoft`s voice recognition systems.

Taiwan's National Cheng Kung University said on Monday it had launched a suit alleging that Apple's use of Siri in its iPhone and future versions of its iPad infringes two U.S. patents it was granted in 2007 and 2010 that relate to voice-to-text technology.

The suit was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division, on Friday, it said.

"We filed that lawsuit in the Texas court because it processes faster and its rulings are usually in favor of patent owners and the compensations are usually higher," said Yama Chen, legal manager of National Cheng Kung, in the southern Taiwan city of Tainan.

He declined to disclose the amount of compensation the university was seeking but said any calculation would be based on Apple's U.S. sales of devices that use Siri.

An Apple representative in Asia could not immediately be reached for comment.

Chen said the university was also examining whether smartphone voice recognition systems used by Google Inc and Microsoft Corp have infringed its patents.

Apple,Google, Microsoft, Samsung, LG , HTC eyeing Kodak patents.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Apple,Google, Microsoft, Samsung, LG , HTC eyeing Kodak patents.

Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung are among the big names reportedly eyeing an acquisition of the patent portfolio of troubled imaging company Eastman Kodak.

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Apple has partnered with Microsoft and patent licensing firm Intellectual Ventures Management to make a bid, while Google and Samsung have partnered with two more companies from the Android ecosystem – LG Electronics and HTC – as well as patent aggregation firm RPX.

The initial deadline for bids is today.

Kodak has previously accused a number of mobile phone companies of infringing its digital imaging intellectual property, including Apple, RIM, Samsung and HTC. It has struck licensing deals with others.

However, last week the US International Trade Commission ruled that a patent asserted by Kodak against RIM is invalid.

According to the WSJ, this setback has stopped Kodak from securing a “stalking horse” – a bidder prepared to commit to buying the assets at a set price, creating a minimum bidding level.

It has previously been noted that any buyer would end up with a portfolio that is already at the heart of numerous ongoing legal disputes, and which has in many cases already been licensed, limiting its strategic appeal.

This could mean that the auction starts off with a low valuation.

Kodak filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this year. Its patent portfolio is seen as its most significant asset, due to the inclusion of digital camera features in a range of devices, including smartphones and tablets.

The company picked up clearance to sell its assets via an auction earlier this month, after Apple and FlashPoint Technologies “asserted ‘ownership’ interests in a small number of the 1,100 patents in the portfolio”. This objection was overturned by the Bankruptcy Court.

Intellectual Ventures, the suggested partner of Microsoft and Apple, was co-founded by former Microsoft executive Nathan Myhrvold. It is said to have a portfolio of “more than 35,000 assets”.

Motorola Mobility boosts Google`s revenues.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.
 Motorola Mobility boosts Google`s revenues.

Google’s revenues soared 35 percent in Q2 as the firm added the recently-acquired Motorola Mobility to its balance sheet for the first time, even though the handset unit reported a significant loss.

The search engine giant’s revenue for the quarter ended 30 June jumped to US$12.21 billion, with Motorola accounting for US$1.25 billion (10 percent) of the total.

Motorola‘s results were included from 22 May, the date the acquisition closed, to the end of the reporting period – described as a “stub quarter” by Google. The unit reported an operating loss of US$192 million.

“We can expect Motorola to continue to show some accounting variability, as is typical with the closing of such large transactions,” said CFO Patrick Pichette.

“We’re excited about the potential to build great devices for users,” said CEO Larry Page with regards to Motorola. He added that the recent launch of the Nexus 7 tablet had generated “rave reviews.”

Google reported Q2 net income of US$2.79 billion (US$8.42 per share), up from US$2.51 billion (US$7.68 per share) a year earlier.

The numbers were generally well received by the analyst community, with many noting that Google’s core online advertising businesses were proving resilient to the tough global economic conditions.

The number of paid clicks (for both Google and network members) grew 42 percent compared to a year ago, though the cost-per-click was down approximately 16 percent.

Traffic acquisition costs, the portion of revenues shared with Google’s partners, increased to US$2.60 billion in the second quarter of 2012, compared to US$2.11 billion a year ago. The TAC as a percentage of advertising revenue was 25 percent, up one percentage point.

Africa: Google launches Gmail SMS service in Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Africa: Google launches Gmail SMS service in Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya.

Google has recently announced Gmail SMS, a new service available in Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya, which brings Gmail to all cellphones capable of sending SMS text messages - no data connection required.

Google states that the only technical capability which cellphones must meet in order to use the service is the ability to send and receive SMS messages, allowing owners of even the most basic or venerable handsets to use email without the need for 3G, EDGE or any other form of data connection. This places the potential of email communication into millions more hands than before.

The Gmail SMS service works as follows: following an initial setup process which presumably does require internet access as it involves linking an existing Gmail account to the cellphone in question, Gmail SMS will then automatically forward emails received to the cellphone as SMS text messages.

Google: Nexus S will come with chip and SW for mobile payments

WorldWideTech.  Francisco De Jess.

Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt showed off a yet-to-be-released phone on Monday with a special chip that allows consumers to quickly pay for items by tapping the phone against a special terminal.
Schmidt said support for the technology, dubbed Near Field Communications, will be integrated into the next version of its Android software, "Gingerbread", which he said will be introduced in a few weeks.
"One way to think about it is, this could replace your credit card," Schmidt said, speaking at the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco.
Google had no immediate plans to develop any of its own mobile applications to take advantage of such payment capabilities, but Schmidt expected other companies to do so.
"My guess is that there are going to be 500 new startups in the mobile payment space as these platforms emerge," Schmidt said. He added that Google would partner with traditional credit card industry players, like payment processors, rather than compete with them.
While NFC technology has been available for years, interoperability with Google's Android software should make the technology more widespread. Google's Android was the second most popular smartphone operating system in the third quarter, according to industry research firm Gartner, behind Nokia's Symbian and ahead of Apple Inc's iOS software, which is used on the iPhone.
In a roundtable briefing with reporters, Schmidt said Google's ability to marry its smartphone software with Internet-based services enabled features like turn-by-turn driving directions and real-time foreign language translation, which distinguished it from rivals' offerings.
"We would argue that our platform is better for applications that are network-resident and that need that kind of power," Schmidt said.
Google, which controls roughly two-thirds of the Internet search market, is increasingly competing with Apple and with social networking giant Facebook.
Earlier on Monday, Facebook unveiled a revamped version of its messaging system that could make it increasingly competitive with Web-based email systems like Google's Gmail and Yahoo Inc's mail service.
Asked about Facebook's potential effect on Gmail, Schmidt said that additional competition would be beneficial, and chided the press for focusing too much on the competition between Google and other technology companies.
"You all are focused on the competition, as opposed to the fact that the market's getting larger," Schmidt said. "And there's no question that more entrants into communications technologies, mobile technologies and so forth, bring more people in."
