LTE: Brazil: Telefonica to launch LTE services in April 2013.

Telefonicas Brazilian unit plans to launch LTE services in April 2013, according to the CEO of the countrys largest operator.

Outlining the carriers aim to upgrade its 3G HSPA network, Paulo Cesar Teixeira told delegates: We will have 4 cities in April next year and then another 6 nearby cities. Teixeira said the chosen cities will be those that are scheduled to host World Cup games in 2014.

The LTE service will be branded 4G Plus, a natural progression from its existing 3G Plus service.

In June this year Telefonicas Brazilian unit Vivo purchased 2x20Mhz chunks of LTE spectrum in the 2.6GHz frequency band. It paid around BRL1.05 billion (US$500 million) for the spectrum. In total the country netted BRL2.72 billion from winnings bids from Vivo, America Movils Claro, TIM Brasil and Oi.

Although the largest operator, Vivo may not be first to market with Brazilian LTE services. Number four operator Oi last month outlined plans to achieve 50 percent coverage in seven Brazilian cities also by April 2013.

Telefonica Digital inked a deal with augmented reality platform Aurasma

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jess.

Telefonica Digital inked a deal with augmented reality platform company Aurasma, to integrate the technology into the digital media services the operator group offers brands and advertisers.

In a statement, Telefonica said the agreement, driven by its global advertising team, represents the biggest deal between a global telecoms company and an augmented reality provider to date.

The partnership will see brands able to use augmented reality in marketing campaigns, and the technology will be supported alongside other offerings such as location-based marketing and mobile coupons, to offer new levels of interactivity and customer engagement.

Telefonica will also look to increase the distribution of Aurasmas app through its mobile customer base, and will use augmented reality in its own marketing campaigns.

Initial availability will be through Telefonicas O2 UK arm, before being made available in other markets in due course.

Since its launch in June 2011, Aurasma has attracted over 8,000 commercial partners to its platform, with more than four million downloads of its app.

Press Release:

Telefnica and Aurasma join forces to drive market for augmented reality.

- Telefnica Digital to integrate Aurasmas Augmented Reality platform into its media services and distribute to mobile customer base.
- Biggest deal ever in the Augmented Reality space, with scope to reach 25 markets and 300m customers.

17 September 2012 Telefnica Digital today announces a global partnership with Aurasma, the worlds leading augmented reality platform.  Under the terms of the deal, Telefnica will integrate Aurasmas cutting-edge technology into the range of media services Telefnica offers brands and advertisers.  The agreement, made by Telefnica Digital's global advertising team, represents the biggest deal between a global telecoms company and an augmented reality provider to date and will see Telefnica drive distribution of Aurasma's technology across its footprint, starting initially with the UK through O2.

Augmented reality (also known as AR) is already bringing traditional media to life, transforming current static forms of advertising into interactive content unlocked by mobiles and tablets. Analysts predict the total AR market will be worth $600 billion by 2016*.

Aurasma's innovative technology recognises images and objects, allowing interactive digital content such as videos, coupons, competitions and 3D animations to be unlocked from virtually any type of media, including outdoor billboards, print adverts, products, physical locations and in-store materials.  Since launch in June 2011, the company has already attracted over 8,000 commercial partners to its platform and reached more than four million downloads of its app.

Under the terms of the partnership, Telefnica will integrate Aurasma into its media offering, enabling brands to benefit from augmented reality as part of their marketing campaigns. The capability will be offered alongside other technologies including location-based marketing and mobile coupons, with Telefnica helping brands to introduce new levels of interactivity and customer engagement into their advertising campaigns.

Telefnica will also seek to increase the distribution of Aurasmas app through its mobile customer base and also implement augmented reality in its own marketing campaigns.

The partnership will initially be rolled out in the UK through O2 and offered to brands through O2 Media. The two companies will work together to introduce new innovations around augmented reality and mobile into the UK market. The capability will be rolled out to other Telefnica markets in due course.

'Augmented reality has the potential to fundamentally change advertising, transforming current static formats and introducing new levels of interactivity,' said Shaun Gregory, Global Director of Advertising at Telefnica Digital. 'Aurasma is the undoubted leader in this space with a uniquely scalable platform approach and best in class image recognition technology.  It has already demonstrated the power of its technology in thousands of innovative campaigns across the world and we look forward to working with them to further drive the use of this technology in advertising and marketing communications.'

Matt Mills, Head of Global Partnerships at Aurasma said, 'We are delighted to be working with Telefnica one of the worlds largest and most innovative telecoms companies.  Telefnica has a deep understanding of the whole mobile ecosystem and so immediately grasped Aurasma's potential to transform the way that people use their phones to engage with the world.  We look forward to working with the Telefnica Digital team to bring this transformation to the thousands of brands who advertise through their media services and over 300 million Telefnica customers.'

Telefónica unveils vision of a future ‘Beyond connectivity

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Telefónica unveils vision of a future ‘Beyond connectivity.

05 July 2012– At an event in London Telefónica Digital  announced a number of significant developments in its strategy for taking Telefónica beyond connectivity. The unit expects to drive annual revenues of approximately €5bn for Telefónica by 2015 with an annual revenue growth rate of 20%, as well as driving considerable additional benefits to Telefónica operations.

Telefónica Digital was created in September 2011 in response to the growing digitisation of the economy and is tasked with seizing new opportunities within services sitting beyond the traditional network connectivity offered by telecommunications operators. Leveraging Telefónica’s core assets in terms of customer base, global reach, local distribution and existing technical expertise, Telefónica Digital is driving incremental revenues across areas ranging from mobile commerce and advertising through to machine-to-machine,eHealthvideo & contentdigital security and cloud computing.

In providing a strategy update to the financial community, Telefónica Digital today unveiled a number of key new developments, including:

Direct to Bill to drive mobile content monetisation
Telefónica announced that it has secured global framework agreements with FacebookGoogleMicrosoft andResearch In Motion (RIM) to offer Direct to Bill payments as a means of driving the monetisation of mobile content. Telefónica believes that it can leverage the billing relationship it has with its mobile customers to increase sales of digital goods and services, particularly in Latin America where credit card penetration is low and 60% of the population do not have bank accounts.

Telefónica has started to roll out Direct to Bill in Europe, where it is already proving popular with customers.  In Germany, 400,000 customers per month on average are now making payments for a variety of products and services across different platforms. Telefónica plans to have the capability live in 14 markets globally by year end.

Strategic Partnerships
Telefónica Digital will not only drive innovation across its own footprint, but also globally in partnership with other network operators. Telefónica today unveiled a wide ranging agreement with Etisalat whereby the two companies will jointly develop business opportunities in Machine-to-Machine (M2M), financial services, cloud computing, eHealth, mobile advertising and over-the-top communications. Under the terms of the agreement, Telefónica will jointly work with Etisalat in the acquisition of video content, while Etisalat will also participate in Telefónica’s global device procurement process. The partnership expands Telefónica’s addressable market by 17 countries and 170m customers.

HTML5
Telefónica Digital reiterated its commitment to driving openness in mobile ecosystems and support forMozilla’s HTML5 platform, which it was recently confirmed will be branded Firefox OS. Through increasing the performance and experience of smartphones at low price points, the initiative is crucial to raising smartphone penetration in developing markets.  Telefónica plans to launch the first devices built to this standard in Brazilin early 2013. Telefónica has been joined by other leading network operators and hardware manufacturers in backing the initiative http://blog.mozilla.org/press/2012/07/mozilla-gains-global-support-for-a-firefox-mobile-os/.

Unlocking the mobile advertising opportunity in Brazil
Telefónica will make a multi million Euros investment to kick start the mobile advertising market in Brazil, using its successful UK O2 Media model as a blueprint. The investment will see a local team put in place to accelerate the deployment of platforms and capabilities in a rapidly expanding overall ad market, currently worth €15 billion*, where mobile advertising is growing faster than Western Europe.

'Today we send out a clear message that our digital strategy is on track and delivering,' said Matthew Key, Chairman & CEO of Telefónica Digital. 'We have a clear vision for Telefónica of becoming a credible leader in a range of new services beyond connectivity and we have set in place the right partnerships with key players, as well as building our own capabilities, to help us achieve this. We are already delivering growth levels well in excess of market norms and we are fast becoming materially significant to Telefónica.'
