Google: Nexus S will come with chip and SW for mobile payments

WorldWideTech.  Francisco De Jess.

Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt showed off a yet-to-be-released phone on Monday with a special chip that allows consumers to quickly pay for items by tapping the phone against a special terminal.
Schmidt said support for the technology, dubbed Near Field Communications, will be integrated into the next version of its Android software, "Gingerbread", which he said will be introduced in a few weeks.
"One way to think about it is, this could replace your credit card," Schmidt said, speaking at the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco.
Google had no immediate plans to develop any of its own mobile applications to take advantage of such payment capabilities, but Schmidt expected other companies to do so.
"My guess is that there are going to be 500 new startups in the mobile payment space as these platforms emerge," Schmidt said. He added that Google would partner with traditional credit card industry players, like payment processors, rather than compete with them.
While NFC technology has been available for years, interoperability with Google's Android software should make the technology more widespread. Google's Android was the second most popular smartphone operating system in the third quarter, according to industry research firm Gartner, behind Nokia's Symbian and ahead of Apple Inc's iOS software, which is used on the iPhone.
In a roundtable briefing with reporters, Schmidt said Google's ability to marry its smartphone software with Internet-based services enabled features like turn-by-turn driving directions and real-time foreign language translation, which distinguished it from rivals' offerings.
"We would argue that our platform is better for applications that are network-resident and that need that kind of power," Schmidt said.
Google, which controls roughly two-thirds of the Internet search market, is increasingly competing with Apple and with social networking giant Facebook.
Earlier on Monday, Facebook unveiled a revamped version of its messaging system that could make it increasingly competitive with Web-based email systems like Google's Gmail and Yahoo Inc's mail service.
Asked about Facebook's potential effect on Gmail, Schmidt said that additional competition would be beneficial, and chided the press for focusing too much on the competition between Google and other technology companies.
"You all are focused on the competition, as opposed to the fact that the market's getting larger," Schmidt said. "And there's no question that more entrants into communications technologies, mobile technologies and so forth, bring more people in."

Facebook wants to be your inbox for every kind of message

WorldWideTech. Francisco De Jess.

Facebook announced an overhaul of its messaging system, which will compete with e-mail.

Facebook wants to be your inbox for every kind of message.

The world's largest social networking company is providing each of its 500 million users with an @facebook.com e-mail address as part of a revamped messaging system that integrates with various types of communications.

Facebook's new inbox can tie together mail sent to someone's e-mail address, instant-message aliases and cell phone number in addition to Facebook's own messages and chat conversations. Like the News Feed, unread notes are ranked by how important Facebook thinks the sender is in your life, and users can tweak those settings.

"Because we know who your friends are," said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, "we can do some really good filtering for you."

Rather than creating separate threads for each conversation, Facebook logs all communications and groups them together by contact. So all chats with your mom are listed on one page. Based on a brief demo Monday, the stripped-down page resembles an IM or text-message window, eliminating the option of e-mail subject lines.

I should only need those two things: a person and a message," Andrew Bosworth, a software engineer at Facebook, said at the company's news event Monday. "The system is definitely not e-mail. We've actually modeled it more after chat."
Incoming messages pop up on the bottom of Facebook's site, similar to the chat feature.

"We think that we should take features away from messaging," Zuckerberg said. "We think it should be minimal."

But like e-mail, users can attach files. Sharing documents via Microsoft's Office Web Apps service will be integrated "over the coming months," a Microsoft spokeswoman said.

The inbox is broken into three folders.

The "social inbox" contains conversations with your top contacts -- people you message with most often. An "other" folder keeps correspondences of less importance, or those with people or companies that Facebook's system is not familiar with, such as banking notices. (Operators of pages you've "Liked" can send messages to this folder as well.) Finally, the service filters what it thinks is spam into a last bin.

Facebook will launch this with a "slow rollout," said Bosworth, turning it on for more users over time. Facebook's iPhone application will support the new inbox Monday for accounts that have it enabled, Bosworth said.

The system may incorporate more services later. Zuckerberg said he considered voice as one.
For instant messaging, it supports Jabber -- the underlying technology of Google Chat -- but not Skype, AIM or Windows Live Messenger. Support for IMAP, which would allow Facebook.com e-mail users to access their inbox from a program such as Microsoft's Outlook, is in development, Zuckerberg said.

Zuckerberg opened the announcement by talking about changes in how young people communicate. He reminisced about a conversation with some high school students who said they primarily talked through Facebook and text messaging on their phones. E-mail is "too slow," he recalled them saying.

"It's not that e-mail doesn't get delivered immediately," Zuckerberg said. "It's too formal."
Numerous studies, as recently as April of this year, have found that e-mail is a very small part of how young people keep in touch. Facebook has modeled its new system to reflect those trends. Zuckerberg said 350 million people use its system for private correspondences, transmitting 4 billion messages a day.

Zuckerberg will take the stage again Tuesday during the Web 2.0 Summit, presumably to elaborate on this new system, which Bosworth said has been among the company's biggest undertakings. The project took about 18 months of work from 15 engineers -- the largest team the company has ever devoted to a new product, Bosworth said.

Invents: The Flying car is among 2010 best inventions. Moves into initial production facility.

WorldWideTech. Francisco De Jess.

A flying car and a device to help paraplegics walk are named among 2010's top inventions.

A few months ago we uploaded this video on youtube when the first news were coming about this wonder.

The below video is an original made by Terrafugia showing the transition of flying. it is very interesting to remember, some dates when flying was made for the firstt time by men back then.

Press release by Terrafugia:

"Flying Car" Company Moves into
Initial Production Facility
Terrafugia, Inc. setting up low-volume production in Woburn, MA
Woburn, MA September 8, 2010:  Terrafugia, Inc., developer of the Transition Roadable Aircraft, or Flying Car, is setting up for low-volume production in a 19,000 sq. ft. facility in Woburn, MA.  After considering proposals from locations throughout the U.S. and the world, Terrafugia has moved forward with plans that could allow low volume production to begin as early as late 2011. Longer term, high volume production plans have not yet been finalized and will be influenced by experience gained in low volume manufacturing.

Following an enthusiastic response to the release of the next generation design of the Transitionat EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in July, two prototypes are currently under construction in Terrafugias new facility. One will undergo extensive drive testing while the other will be used to complete Light Sport Aircraft certification flight testing. Experience from the construction of these prototypes will also be used to finalize the initial price point of the vehicle, which is expected to be between $200,000 and $250,000.

Terrafugia expects to create an additional fifty skilled manufacturing jobs at its new facility by 2013 to support early production demand.  Reservations have already been placed for the aircraft that will be built in the first two to three years of production and are still being accepted with a $10,000 refundable deposit.

Chief Operating Officer Anna Mracek Dietrich has been energized by the move: It is exciting to be in the facility where the first Transitions will be built for our customers and to see the production prototypes under construction in that space.  CEO/CTO Carl Dietrich is looking ahead to long term financial stability for the company: We can get to positive net income and be self-sustaining in a relatively short time here. There are still many options to continue our growth in the future, but this move lets us lay a solid foundation for Terrafugias future today.  Dietrich also adds: Were pleased to be able to set up low volume production near our companys roots here in Massachusetts.

Terrafugia (terra-FOO-gee-ah), based in Woburn, MA, is comprised of a team of award-winning engineers who have been advancing the state of personal aircraft since 2006.  Founded by five pilots who are graduates of MIT and supported by a world-class network of advisors and private investors, Terrafugias mission is the innovative expansion of personal mobility.  "Terrafugia" is Latin for "escape from land."

Japan: Panasonic will launch Android smartphones on 2011 and overseas 2012

WorlWideTech. Francisco De Jess

A Come back:

Panasonic Corp said on Tuesday it will begin sales of its own smartphones in Japan early next year and overseas in 2012, in a late but ambitious attempt to grab share of the booming market.
Based on Google Inc's Android operating system, the new phones will compete against Apple Inc's iPhone, which dominates the Japanese smartphone market, as well as with Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S.
The Japanese consumer electronics giant admitted it was late joining the smartphone party, but said it hoped to differentiate its handsets by emphasizing network capabilities with other Panasonic products.
"We misjudged the speed at which smartphones would be taken up in the Japanese market," Osamu Waki, head of the company's mobile communications unit told a news conference. "With the rapid shift to Android, we want to catch up quickly."
Panasonic aims to raise total mobile phone sales to 15 million units worldwide in 2015, compared with forecast sales of 5.4-5.5. million units in Japan alone in the year to March. The company pulled out of overseas mobile phone markets in 2006.
Rival Sharp Corp, which currently ranks a distant third in Japan's smartphone sales, said on Monday it was aiming for 30 percent of the domestic market in the next two to three years.

What is Jolicloud 1.1 ?

WorldWideTech. Francisco De Jess.

From the Jolicloud Blog:
Jolicloud 1.1 is an upgrade of Jolicloud 1.0 that resynchronizes our back-end operating system with the Long Term Support (LTS) provided by Ubuntu. The previous version of Jolicloud was synced on Jaunty (9.04), with an upgrade of selected packages from Lucid (10.04). This upgrade will provide a three year maintenance update, up to April 2013.
Jolicloud is all about the experience, the elegance, and the performance, providing the best possible user interface with an efficient operating system. This is why we have developed our own front end leveraging HTML5 technologies on top of the Chromium browser. Therefore, Jolicloud doesnt need to upgrade all of the user-interface packages included in Maverick.
This release is designed to upgrade the components required to improve battery life, system stability, supported hardware, and overall quality of the operating system.
Weve worked hard to provide the most out-of-the-box experience with Jolicloud 1.1. This is what makes us stand out from other operating systems. By providing support for exotic components (like Nvidia ION, Intel Poulsbo, and touchscreens) and enhancing support for the latest CPU hardware (like the new Atom N550), you will find that Jolicloud 1.1 provides the best level of experience on all types of computers, not only netbooks.

Below is a summary of the software changes introduced by Jolicloud 1.1. By using Jolicloud, you will have access to the latest, most stable software on the most fun and user friendly operating system available.
Resync to Lucid (10.04) for base packages

Ubiquity and OEM-config upgraded to 2.2.25
o    More user-friendly installation process
         Miscellaneous internal OS upgrades
o    Mostly non-critical bug fixes and feature enhancements from upstream Debian software vendors.
o    Many internal libraries and command-line programs upgraded, like zip, wget, gcc, xterm, etc.
