Windows Phone 8 features details.

Microsoft officially unveiled its Windows Phone 8 platform yesterday, a device operating system that is set to power new smartphones from Nokia, HTC and Samsung. While the platform was previewed in June 2012, the company used an event yesterday to showcase several new features that have not previously been revealed.

It also provided an update on its app ecosystem, stating that it is approaching the point where 46 out of the top 50 titles available for other platforms have been ported to Windows Phone which Joe Belfiore, corporate VP for the company, described as huge progress for us.

New features showcased by Belfiore included Kids Corner, which it describes as a worry-free way to share your phone with your kids by limiting the features available to prevent accidental misuse; and Rooms, which enables users to create private groups with which to share information with some features also made available to users of smartphones powered by other OS platforms.

Also new is Data Sense, which uses compression to minimise the amount of data transferred; offloads data to Wi-Fi where appropriate; and adjusts usage when nearing data bundle limits.

Belfiore said that this feature will be made available in partnership with mobile operator partners, and is rolling out with mobile operators starting with our [November] launch and going into 2013. The first named operator supporting it is Verizon Wireless.

Windows Phone 8 is also being positioned as the perfect companion for your Windows devices and your Xbox, in partnership with the Skydrive cloud storage platform. This will enable users to share images, video and music between different terminals, with Belfiore adding that its the first cloud service that fully integrates and syncs your Office documents, so you can access them from any of your devices.

As with the earlier Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 7.5 platforms, the latest version of the platform centres around a tiles interface, which can be used to push personal information to the home screen of the device. These can also be used by app developers to deliver content, and information can now also be pushed to the devices lock screen.

Belfiore noted: I would say that the state of the art in the core smartphone experience hasnt really evolved much in the five years since its inception. If you think about the predominant user experience on most of the smartphones people are using today, it was standardised by Apple and the iPhone, and essentially that same interface was copied by Android and Android phones, and it really hasnt evolved all that much. The static grid of icons has been the standard on smartphones.

Devices powered by Windows Phone 8 are set for launch next month. In a US-focused release, it was said that major mobile operators will start selling Windows Phone 8 in the coming weeks, with Verizon Wireless, AT&T and T-Mobile USA on board.

Microsoft was less forthcoming on the rollout plans for international markets.

BlackBerry 10 now being tested by 50+ carriers worldwide.Pentagon will keep carrying BB devices.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jess.

BlackBerry 10 now being tested by 50+ carriers worldwide. Pentagon will keep carrying BB devices.

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins announced in a statement on Wednesday that handsets running the new OS were now being tested by more than 50 carriers worldwide.

BlackBerry 10 passes critical milestone - enters carrier lab testing.

Thorsten Heins, President and CEO, Research In Motion, said:

Im very pleased to confirm that we have passed a critical milestone in the development of our brand new mobile computing platform, BlackBerry 10. In the last week, BlackBerry 10 achieved Lab Entry with more than 50 carriers a key step in our preparedness for the launch of BlackBerry 10 in the first quarter of 2013. We made this commitment during our recent results conference call and we have delivered. This process will continue in the coming months as more carriers around the world formally evaluate the devices and our brand new software.

I have spent the last several weeks on the road visiting with carrier partners around the world to show them the BlackBerry 10 platform and to share with them our plans for launch. Their response has been tremendous. They are excited about the prospect of launching BlackBerry 10 in their markets. Our respective teams are now engaged on the technical and commercial preparation of the launch of BlackBerry 10 and the lab entry is an important milestone in that context.

The hard work will not stop here as we build towards launch. Our developer teams are continuing to generate momentum to bring a wealth of applications to BlackBerry 10, our enterprise teams have started to present BlackBerry 10 devices and services to our business customers, and our engineers are fully mobilized to ensure that BlackBerry 10 launches flawlessly in the first quarter of 2013.

In other news involving the mobile company, the Pentagon made clear this week that it would carry on supporting large numbers of BlackBerry handsets despite going ahead with plans to allow the US military to use other devices such as the iPhone.

The Defense Information Systems Agency is managing an enterprise email capability that continues to support large numbers of RIM devices, a spokesman told Reuters this week. A number of government agencies and businesses have said in the last year they would be issuing staff with iOS or Android devices, ending long-standing contracts with BlackBerry. While the Pentagon also appears to be relaxing its association with RIM, things are so serious at the Canadian company that the defense agencys announcement that its not switching entirely to rival devices will actually be perceived as good news by many.

The BlackBerry was once the phone of choice for many agencies and firms thanks largely to its strong security features. However, security on rival handsets such as Apples iPhone and a number of Android-powered devices has improved over time, offering an alternative to the BlackBerry.

Disney buys Lucasfilm for $4B. Star Wars "Episode 7" for 2015.

Disney buys Lucasfilm for $4B. Star Wars "Episode 7" for 2015.

lucasfilm disney lucas iger
Disney, CEO Robert Iger, left, and George Lucas of Lucasfilm sign the deal Tuesday letting Disney acquire the "Star Wars" studio for about $4 billion.

Disney is buying Lucasfilm Ltd., the production company behind "Star Wars," from its chairman and founder, George Lucas (shown here). It's also making a seventh movie in the "Star Wars" series, called "Episode 7," set for release in 2015.

Lucas, who receives 40 million Disney shares from the deal, will be the second-largest non-institutional shareholder of Disney, Bloomberg News says, behind the trust of deceased Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.
The 68-year-old Lucas will serve as a creative consultant but plans to retire.
"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next," said Lucas, chairman and CEO of Lucasfilm, in a statement. "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers."
Said Disney CEO Robert Iger: "This is one of the great entertainment properties of all time, one of the best branded and one of the most valuable, and it's just fantastic for us to have the opportunity to both buy it, run it and grow it."
The big screen isn't the only place that there might be tales from the galaxy far, far away. "We really like Star Wars' potential on TV as well," Iger says, "and we think (cable-satellite channel) Disney XD will be a great home for that."
The buyout is Disney's fourth largest deal ever. It's behind the $19.7 billion, $7.6 billion and $5.2 billion buyouts of Capital Cities/ABC in 1995, Pixar in 2006 and Fox Family in 2001, respectively, says S&P Capital IQ. It tops the $3.96 billion Disney paid for Marvel in August 2009.
Disney expects to more aggressively expand the Star Wars film schedule, Iger said in a statement. Following the release of Episode VII in 2015, "our long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years," Iger said.
Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX, Iger said, would follow "probably on a cadence of every other year and then go from there. . . . The (first) film is in early stage development right now."
Based on Disney's closing price on Oct. 26, the deal is valued at roughly $4.1 billion. Disney (DIS) will pay half that value in cash and issue 40 million shares of Disney to pay for the rest. Also included in the deal are special-effects house Industrial Light & Magic, Skywalker Sound and video game company LucasArts.
Lucasfilm spokeswoman Lynne Hale said Disney's "intent is for everyone (in Lucas' various companies) to stay where they are." ILM is headquartered in the Presidio in San Francisco, while Skywalker Sound and Lucasfilm are on a series of ranches Lucas owns in Marin County.
"As far as the legacy George has created, we don't take that lightly," Disney chief Iger said. "We definitely plan to expand the presence of Star Wars in our parks which could include new parks."
Wall Street is hopeful Disney can quickly recoup the money by fully tapping the potential for more movies, theme park tie-ins and merchandise, says David Miller, analyst at investment research firm Caris. "If you look at how acquisitive Disney has been, it's all about content," he says. Lucasfilm "is one of the great entertainment franchises of all time."
Many investors were caught off guard by the announcement, but there have been questions about what Disney would do with its mounting pile of cash. Disney had $4.4 billion in cash and short-term investments as of the end of June. "Disney did a good job keeping this quiet," Miller says.
Kathleen Kennedy, co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will report to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Kennedy, who produced Schindler's List and War Horse, will become the new studio president and be executive producer on the new films.
Film critic Leonard Maltin, also a historian of the medium, was taken aback by the news and had questions about it.
"There's no way of telling where this is going to go at this point," Maltin said. "Obviously Disney, as they did with Marvel, is investing in a bluechip property that will yield dividends for years to come.
"But it's not a fresh property," he added. "But it remains to be seen if they revive the characters. There are a lot of unanswered questions."
The latest part of the Star Wars saga, Star Wars Episode VII, is targeted for a 2015 release.
Peter Sealey, a California professor and former president of marketing and distribution for Columbia Pictures, says it appears Lucas gains the most out of the deal.
"George Lucas was never a part of Hollywood, he was always an outlier who left for northern California as soon as he had a hit," Sealey said.
"So this is an end of an area, the story of a brilliant filmmaker who had one incredibly long home run. This was the only exit strategy he really had. He never wanted to grow the company."
Sealey said he can't imagine Disney would let Lucasfilm's entities keep operating away from Disney's home base in the Los Angeles area. "I don't see how or why you keep any of this up in that area, it'll all move down to Burbank," he said.
Disney's theatrical lineup could use a boost in some areas. While the studio's animatedWreck-It Ralph, due Friday, has healthy buzz, other recent releases such as Mars Needs Moms and John Carter have disappointed.
"We actually determined that we'd be better off as a company releasing a sequel to Star Wars than probably most other, I'll call them 'not yet determined' films," Iger said. "So we love the fact that this will take its place in our live-action strategy as an already-branded, already-known quantity."
Disney, The Force be with you.

Google launched 3 Nexus in 3 sizes. Video: Ask me anything.

Google launched 3 Nexus in 3 sizes. Video: Ask Me anything.

People increasingly have more than one device, and they switch between them many times a day. NexusGoogles hardware line for Android devicesgets rid of the hassle. Just sign in with your Google Account and everything is there ready to go, whatever device youre using: photos, emails, contacts, bookmarks, even your entertainment on Google Play.

Today, were excited to announce three great new Nexus devices in small, medium and large. And they all run Android 4.2, a new flavor of Jelly Beanwhich includes the latest version of Google Now and other great new features.

Nexus 4 with Google Now and Photo Sphere
Nexus 4 is our latest smartphone, developed together with LG. It has a quad-core processor which means it's super fast, a crisp 4.7" (320 ppi) display that's perfect for looking at photos and watching YouTube, and with wireless charging you just set the phone down on a charging surface to power it up, no wires needed.

While Nexus 4 is incredibly powerful under the hood, it also features the latest version of Jelly Bean, Android 4.2the simplest and smartest version of Android yet. Starting with the camera, we've reinvented the photo experience with Photo Sphere, which lets you capture images that are literally larger than life. Snap shots up, down and in every direction to create stunning 360-degree immersive experiences that you can share on Google+ with friends and familyor you can add your Photo Sphere to Google Maps for the world to see.

Android 4.2 brings other great goodies like Gesture Typing, which lets you glide your finger over the letters you want to type on the keyboardit makes typing fast, fun and a whole lot simpler. Android 4.2 also adds support for wireless display so you can wirelessly watch movies, YouTube videos and play games right on your Miracast-compatible HDTV.

Learn more about all of the new features of Android 4.2, Jelly Bean, here.

Google Noweven more useful
We designed Google Now to make life simpler by giving you the right information at just the right time in easy to read cards, before you even ask. And the feedback has been awesome. So today were adding more cards that we hope youll find useful. Flight information, restaurant reservations, hotel confirmations and shipping detailshow often have you found yourself wading through your email to get this information at the last moment? So next time you book a table for dinner, youll get a reminder with all the details without ever having to lift a finger. Youll also get cards for nearby attractions, interesting photo spots, movies times at nearby theaters or concerts by your favorite artists.

Nexus 7: Thin, light and now even more portable
Nexus 7 brings you the best of GoogleYouTube, Chrome, Gmail, Mapsand all the great content from Google Play in a slim, portable package that fits perfectly in your hand. To give you more room for all that great content you can now get Nexus 7 with 16GB ($199) or 32GB ($249) of storage. But we also wanted to make this highly portable tablet even more mobile. So we added HSPA+ mobile data. Nexus 7 is now also available with 32GB and HSPA+ mobile ($299), which can operate on more than 200 GSM providers worldwide, including AT&T and T-Mobile in the U.S.

Nexus 10: Powerful and shareable
Nexus 10 is the ultimate tablet for watching movies or reading magazines. We wanted to build a premium entertainment device, so we partnered with Samsung to do just that. Nexus 10 is the highest resolution tablet on the planet with a 10.055" display at 2560-by-1600 (300ppi), that's over 4 million pixels right in your hands.

It comes with a powerful battery that will get you up to nine hours of video playback and more than 500 hours of standby time. With a set of front-facing stereo speakers, you can watch movies right from your Nexus 10 and they simply sound awesome.

But what makes Nexus 10 unique is that it's the first truly shareable tablet. With Android 4.2, you can add multiple users and switch between them instantly right from the lockscreen. We believe that everyone should have quick and easy access to their own stuff -- email, apps, bookmarks, and more. That way, everyone can have their own home screens, their own music, and even their own high scores.

Google Play: More entertainment, more countries
Weve recently added a ton of great new entertainment to Google Play, such as movies and TV shows from Twentieth Century Fox. Earlier this year we expanded our service beyond movie rentals and now you can purchase movies and build a library of your favorites in Google Play. Today were bringing movie purchasing to more countries - Canada, the U.K., France, Spain and Australia.

Video: World's first all rubber speaker.

Video: World's first all rubber speaker.

World's first all rubber speaker made from artificial muscles is thin, soft and bassy.

Tokai Rubber Industries has developed the world's first all-rubber speaker. This speaker utilizes Smart Rubber, which conducts electricity and can freely expand or contract, to generate sound.

Previously, the company developed flexible, all-rubber touch sensors using Smart Rubber. This all-rubber speaker arose from the company's new line of development: materials for artificial muscles.   Q. "Until now, thin speakers have been piezoelectric and film types, as used in smartphones and tablets. But those don't produce low-frequency sounds. By contrast, the rubber speaker we've developed does produce low frequencies. It's the first speaker of this kind in the world."
This speaker consists of a piece of non-conductive rubber sandwiched between two rubber electrodes. When a voltage is applied between the rubber electrodes, static electricity is generated, causing the sheet to expand. Sound waves are generated by the repeated expansion and restorative force of the rubber sheet.
"Of course, technology is needed to make rubber conduct electricity. What our technology does is give the rubber a uniform surface charge. Another thing needed is insulating rubber between the pieces of conductive rubber. Each type of rubber has to be flexible, and the insulating rubber mustn't change its resistance when it expands. That's a key technology in this speaker."
"Wearing headphones is a bit of a hassle, so we'd like to use the flexibility of this speaker to build it into chairs and the like. That way, people could enjoy audio in open settings."
"Currently, we don't have a specific product roadmap. We'd like to think about needs and applications together with potential customers, including those at CEATEC. Then, we'd like to turn this speaker into a commercial product."

Q3 2012: Samsung dominates smartphone market. Nokia on free fall.

Q3 2012: Samsung dominates smartphone market. Nokia on free fall.

The latest smartphone market share rankings from analyst firms make grim reading for one-time giant Nokia; a statement from Strategy Analytics today notes that Nokia has slipped outside the top three global smartphone rankings for the first time in history, while IDC goes a step further and claims the firm has exited the top five.

Data from Strategy Analytics states Samsung shipped 56.9 million smartphones worldwide in the third quarter of 2012, the largest number of units ever shipped by a smartphone vendor in a single quarter. Apple grew a healthy 57 percent annually and shipped 26.9 million smartphones worldwide for 17 percent market share, up from 14 percent recorded a year earlier.

Samsung and Apple combined now account for over half of all smartphones shipped worldwide, up from around one-third a year ago.

Strategy Analytics says Nokia shipped 6.3 million smartphones worldwide for a 4 percent marketshare in Q3 2012, dipping from 16.8 million units and 14 percent share in Q3 2011.

Nokia will need to ramp up sharply its Windows Phone volumes if it wants to recapture a top-three smartphone position in the next one to two quarters, commented Neil Shah, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics.

The news from IDC is even worse for Nokia. "Nokia's exit from the Top 5, where it had resided since the inception of IDC's Mobile Phone Tracker in 2004, was precipitated by the rise of Samsung and Apple globally and high-growth vendors like Huawei in China, where Nokia was the dominant player as recently as the third quarter of 2011," notes a statement.

Both analyst firms differ slightly in their calculations for overall global smartphone shipments. IDC claims the total vendor market shipped 179.7 million units in Q3 2012 compared to 123.7 million units in Q3 2011, a 45.3 percent year-over-year growth rate. Strategy Analytics estimated that global smartphone shipments grew 35 percent annually from 120.0 million units in Q3 2011 to 161.7 million in Q3 2012.

According to the latest research from our Tablet & Touchscreen Strategies (TTS) service, global tablet shipments reached 25 million units in the third quarter of 2012. Apple iOS slipped to 57 percent global market share, allowing Android to capture a record 41 percent share.
Peter King, Director at Strategy Analytics, said, Global tablet shipments reached 24.7 million units in Q3 2012, rising a sluggish 43 percent from 17.2 million in Q3 2011. Demand for tablets slowed due to ongoing economic uncertainty and consumers holding off purchases in anticipation of multiple new models, like the iPad Mini, during the upcoming Q4 holiday season. Apple shipped a disappointing 14.0 million iPads worldwide and captured 57 percent share in the third quarter of 2012, dipping from 64 percent a year ago. Apples slowdown allowed the Android community to make gains and Androids global share of the tablet market now stands at a record 41 percent.
Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, Android captured a record 41 percent share of global tablet shipments in Q3 2012, jumping from 29 percent a year earlier. Global Android tablet shipments doubled annually to 10.2 million units. No single Android vendor comes close to Apple in volume terms at the moment, but the collective weight of dozens of hardware partners, such as Asus, Samsung and Nook, is helping Googles Android platform to register a growing presence in tablets.
Other findings from the research include:
  • Global tablet shipments grew just 43 percent annually in Q3 2012, compared with 289 percent annually in Q2 2011. This was the weakest growth rate since the modern tablet industry began in Q2 2010;
  • Microsoft captured a niche 2 percent global tablet share in Q3 2012. The imminent release of the new Windows 8 operating system will likely drive Microsoft tablet volumes higher during the Q4 2012 holiday season.
