Deutsche Telekom has launched an M2M apps developer community.

Deutsche Telekom has launched an M2M developer community to provide a means for developers to build and promote apps for what the company calls the “internet of things”.

The community provides access to APIs, programming guidelines and software development kits for building and selling M2M apps easily and quickly. Apps can then be marketed and sold on Deutsche Telekom’s M2M Marketplace. It also provides forums for developers to exchange information and ideas with each other and Deutsche Telekom experts.

An example of the kind of app that can be built using the community is a smoke detector that can be monitored online using an M2M API and which can then be meshed with an SMS API to create an SMS alert.

“Our M2M Developer Community is designed to serve as a central point of contact and exchange for M2M developers globally,” said senior VP of core telco products at Deutsche Telekom’s Digital Business Unit, Rainer Deutschmann.

The community will soon add a dedicated programming environment for building and testing M2M apps, while new APIs are being added all the time.

Deutsche Telekom launched its Developer Garden Component Marketplace across Europe in July in collaboration with mobile development marketplace Verious, providing access to app components and core telecom service APIs.

Operators back Firefox open mobile OS plans.

Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia, Telefonica and Telenor are supporting Mozilla’s planned HTML5-based platform for mobile handsets, which it was today revealed will use the Firefox OS brand.

The first devices powered by Mozilla will be manufactured by TCL (under the Alcatel One Touch brand) and ZTE, running on Qualcomm processors. Initial launches will take place in Brazil early in 2013, through the Vivo arm of Telefonica.

According to a statement, the operators are supporting Firefox OS because of “the potential of the technology to deliver compelling smartphone experiences at attainable prices.”

Mozilla first announced its intentions to move into the device platform space with its Boot to Gecko project. The company picked up support from Telefonica at the GSMA Mobile World Congress this year, when Telefonica Digital said it would work with the company to showcase an architecture where every phone feature is delivered via HTML5.

The web technology company said that it and its partners are “committed to ensuring the project is fully open and the reference implementation of the required web APIs is being submitted to W3C for standardisation.”

Matthew Key, chairman and CEO of Telefonica Digital, said: “The breadth of support for this initiative across the industry makes it clear that there is an opportunity in the market for a new, open mobile ecosystem.”
