Samsung, Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba working on Windows RT devices.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Samsung, Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba working on Windows RT  devices.

Qualcomm Inc is providing chips for new devices from Dell Incand Samsung Electronics Co. that run Microsoft Corp.'s Windows RT operating system, people familiar with the matter said.

The newest version of Windows, to be released in October, will be the first to work with chips based on the ARM Holdings PLC architecture, not just those from traditional partners Intel Corp.  and Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

Microsoft and system makers are turning to makers of ARM-based chips--used in most smartphones and tablets--to make inroads against Apple Inc.'s  iPad, which continues to dominate the market. Both Dell and Samsung are working on tablets that run on Qualcomm's application processors, people familiar with the matter said.

The Dell product is a notebook that converts to a tablet, one of the people said.

Other details weren't immediately known. Microsoft and its hardware partners have said products will be unveiled as the market approaches the Windows 8 and Windows RT launch.Qualcomm dominates the smartphone market, but it has had some setbacks with Windows RT.

PC giant Hewlett-Packard Co.  was working with Qualcomm on a Windows RT device, but it said in June that it had set aside immediate plans for the new technology. Instead, H-P said it would focus on Intel-powered tablets for business users. And Microsoft chose to use processors from Nvidia Corp.  when it created its self-branded tablet, dubbed Surface.

Some PC makers have privately complained about the lack of software and other aspects of adopting Windows RT, including the question of consumer demand for the product. Adding to the challenges for companies considering Windows RT is Microsoft's push to make its own hardware. The Surface announcement is believed to have surprised and angered computer makers, which now face the prospect of competing with their software partner.
Microsoft on Monday provided some new details about the development of devices that use Windows RT including discussing which PC makers are working on tablets. The company has limited the number of computer designers who could work with chip makers for an initial release of Windows RT tablets. Nvidia has been working with Asustek Computer Inc. and Lenovo Group Ltd. according to people familiar with the matter.
The final Windows RT chip supplier, Texas Instruments Inc. , has been working with Toshiba Corp. on Windows RT devices, with the two earlier this year demonstrating a tablet. Questions about the device emerged following Microsoft's blog post Monday that left Toshiba off the list of Windows RT tablet partners.

A Toshiba spokesman said the company plans to release a statement later Monday. TI, meanwhile, said its Windows RT development and collaboration with Microsoft are "still going strong."

Dell aims to ship 30 million notebooks in 2013.

Compal Electronics and Wistron have landed Dell's 2013 notebook orders equivalent to 70% and about 30%, respectively, of Dell's total shipments, according Taiwan-based supply chain makers.

The 2013 orders released by Dell to Compal cover almost all enterprise models, while consumer models are shared by Compal and Wistron, the sources indicated. Quanta Computer is among Dell's ODM in 2012, but has not yet landed orders shipments in 2013.

While Dell aims to ship 30 million notebooks in 2013, the goal ambitious based on projections that Dell will ship 20-23 million notebooks in 2012.

Hewlett-Packard is expected to decide its 2013 ODM orders at the end of July, and Quanta may obtain orders accounting for 40-45% the total while Wistron and Inventec are each likely to land orders for 20% of the total.

RIM, HP May Drive Price War to Chase Apples IPad

Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Research In Motion Ltd., Hewlett- Packard Inc. and other hardware makers may use a price war to narrow Apple Inc.s lead in the market for tablet computers, analysts said.
RIM this week joined HP, Acer Inc., LG Electronics Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. and Dell Inc. in announcing plans to sell tablets. The new rivals will probably grapple for sales by appealing to consumers pocketbooks, said Rhoda Alexander, an analyst at market-research firm ISuppli Corp.

Apple used the iPad to build a market for devices that pack more features than a smart phone, yet are more compact than a laptop. The iPad, with sales of more than $2 billion its first quarter, will have 84 percent of the market this year, ISuppli says. Lower prices on rival devices may slow Apples gains even if they dont force it to follow suit, Alexander said.

A price war is inevitable, said Alexander of El Segundo, California-based ISuppli. Whether Apple participates in a price war is another question.

That echoes remarks by Kazuo Hirai, president of Tokyo- based Sony Corp.s Networked Products & Services Group, who said 23 companies plan to build tablets. Sony has said its still considering whether to sell a model.

Apple, based in Cupertino, California, rose $1.48 to $288.34 in Nasdaq Stock Market trading at 9:53 a.m. New York time. It had climbed 36 percent this year before today. RIM rose 85 cents, or 1.8 percent, to $47.76.

RIM hasnt set a price for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet it introduced this week. The PlayBook, slimmer and lighter than the iPad, will be sold at a very competitive price, RIM co- CEO Jim Balsillie said in an interview this week.

Low-Cost Options
RIM may eventually charge as little as $299 for the device, said Vijay Rakesh, an analyst at Sterne Agee & Leach Inc. in Chicago. That compares with $499 for the cheapest iPad. The PlayBook may lack key features found in the iPad, Rakesh said. In Europe, Toshiba Corp. is charging less than the iPad for its Folio 100 tablet. Dells Streak tablet costs as low as $299 with a two-year contract with AT&T Inc.

You already have a lot of low-cost options out there, but they arent the devices people want, said Alexander.

Samsung hasnt officially announced a price for its Galaxy Tab, which will run on Google Inc.s Android operating system and will be available by the holidays. AT&T and Sprint Nextel Corp. will subsidize the price, two people familiar with the arrangement said earlier this month.

Smartphones running Googles operating systems have surpassed Apples iPhone in the U.S., according to researcher Gartner Inc.

Margins, Market Share
Still, sales have held up even though Apple hasnt cut iPhone prices since the debut of Android phones, said Brian Marshall, an analyst with Gleacher & Co. in San Francisco. Cheaper alternatives also havent displaced the iPod as the bestselling digital music player.

If Apple isnt seeing price pressure in smartphones, its safe to assume that Apple will not see price pressure any time soon on the iPad, Marshall said. He said the company may introduce iPads with different price levels to attract cost- conscious consumers, an approach Apple has used with the iPhone.

Investors will stay attuned to whether competition leads to narrower margins, he said.

Gross margin, the percentage of sales left after production costs, was 39.1 percent for Apple in the third quarter. Research In Motions margins were 44.5 percent last quarter and HPs were 23.8 percent.
Tablet sales could top 50 million next year, with Apple taking a majority of them, Marshall said.

While Apple may not get involved in a pricing tussle, the company may see a loss of share, said Larry Peruzzi, senior equity trader at Cabrera Capital Markets in Boston.

Imitation is the best form of flattery but the worst for market share, Peruzzi said.

Dell to launch 7 and 10 inches tablets to challenge iPad?

U.S. computer maker Dell reportedly plans to take on Apple's iPad with a smaller, 7-inch device set to launch in a matter of weeks, as well as a 10-inch touchscreen device planned to debut in the next year.

As noted Wednesday by The Wall Street Journal, the president of Dell in Greater China revealed that the 7-inch tablet, shown off briefly last week by CEO Michael Dell, will launch "within the next few weeks." The device will run Google's Android mobile operating system.

Amit Midha of Dell also indicated that his company plans to launch "a whole slew" of new products in the next 6-12 months, including a 10-inch tablet closer in size to Apple's 9.7-inch iPad. Midha said his company will offer products in multiple sizes, including three and four inches, and some of them will run Microsoft Windows instead of Android.

He also revealed that Dell will provide tablets running Google's lightweight Chrome OS operating system, designed for low-cost netbooks and lightweight portable devices. Google's browser-based operating system is set to launch this fall.

In August, Dell launched the Streak, a 5-inch device that functions as a smartphone, but has been pitched by the computer maker as a "tablet." The device runs on the AT&T network in the U.S., and costs $299 with a two-year contract, or $549 without. It also runs Android 1.6, though an update to Froyo 2.2 is planned.

Device makers like Dell are clamoring to break in to the touchscreen tablet market, where Apple has made a splash with the success of its multi-touch iPad. The iPad sold more than 3 million in its first three months, and retail expansion is expected to help push the device to 21 million in 2011.

Dell CEO Flashes 7-inch Android Tablet Computer

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Dell is working on a 7-inch tablet that runs Google's Android operating software.

Not much else is publicly known about the computer. Dell CEO Michael Dell flashed it briefly Wednesday at Oracle's annual conference in San Francisco, but offered no hard details. Dell spokesman Matthew Parretta declined to say when the prototype would go on sale.

Dell is just one of many consumer electronics companies scrambling to crack the computer industry's most compelling new niche. Apple's iPad proved consumers are interested and willing to pay the company sold 3.3 million in the first quarter iPads were available. Some analysts say iPads have already started eating away at laptop sales.

Just as Apple's iPhone set the bar for the smartphone industry, the iPad, with its 9.7-inch screen, is now the reference point for future tablets, making it harder for companies with a different vision to compete.
Dell's first move in the modern tablet space was a much smaller gadget called the Streak, which went on sale in August. It has a 5-inch screen and runs a version of Android; it can also make phone calls on AT&T's network.

The Streak got a chilly reception, with critics saying the device was too awkward to use as a giant phone and too small to use as a computer. The response highlights another of the industry's biggest challenges: resolving the identity crises that crop up when devices try to do too many things at once.
