Video news about HP CEO and Palm webos

I would not tilte this post like Reuters did "New HP CEO fuels doubt" I think the video is an opinion made by the PC Mag CEO and thats it. Link :http://www.reuters.com/news/video/story?videoId=163769522&videoChannel=6

A new HP. With a Software CEO.

A new HP  With a Software CEO.
Putting software executives on top of a company that has little in the way of software means there are big changes coming at HP. This can only work with an umbrella company structure, where each of the divisions are like small complete companies led by experts, otherwise these executives would likely create a Sun-like result. In an umbrella company, you can be more creative. Recall that Louis Gerstner, who came from RJR Nabisco, successfully turned IBM around because expertise in IBMs business wasnt critical there either, because that expertise exists strongly with the division heads.

HP, now armed with the knowledge of how Oracle was successfully turned around, and knowledge on how SAP was built, will be able to design a software entity from scratch with properties like 3Par at its core to address the market of today. I would expect a number of acquisitions, top executive changes (it would be unusual for Todd Bradley to remain given both his connection to Mark Hurd, and his heavily lobbied play to be HP CEO), and at least one divestiture (the printing and imaging division would appear to be more valuable outside of HP than inside, and the head of that division could easily run a complete company).

Apple isnt the initial target of this new company, but Oracle is, and while it will likely take a number of years to build HP into something different, the company that results should be vastly more able to deal with emerging market opportunities than the one that exists today can. As far as the Palm-based tablet, it may be the first true cloud client designed against an enterprise-level back end. The fastest growing cloud opportunity is desktop virtualization, and of all of the big players, only HP has a new-age client they actually own.
This is going to get interesting.

HP's new CEO hints that software will be priority

NEW YORK -- Hewlett-Packard Co.'s new CEO signaled Friday that expanding the company's software business will be a top priority.

HP announced the hiring of Leo Apotheker, the former head of business software maker SAP AG, late Thursday. On a conference call Friday morning, Apotheker called software the "glue" that holds together the different parts of the company.

"Software is how we can make sure that the various parts of our technology actually fit well together," he said.

HP has been trying to build on its personal computer and printer businesses by expanding into technology services, data storage and security.

Analysts have questioned the hiring of a CEO who resigned abruptly from his last job after less than two years in the position.

But the company defended its pick Friday, saying Apotheker was the only candidate offered the CEO job.
HP Director Robert Ryan pointed out that Apotheker helped SAP post 18 consecutive quarters of double-digit growth in software revenue between 2004 and 2009.

Highlights and quotes from Incoming CEO Apotheker call with investors

hpceo_image002.jpg

This morning incoming CEO Lo Apotheker spoke with financial analysts about his new role.  Heres a few highlights and quotes from the call, if youd like to listen to the whole thing a replay will be available here.

For more information, including Lo's biography, HP photos, and more, click here.

- Lo was the only person offered the position, and the Boards decision was unanimous

- Robert Ryan, lead independent director of the Board, said that Lo has demonstrated success in the U.S. market and has major international experience, can lead HP in high-growth emerging markets, and can manage a global, complex organization.

Ryan added, From the day the Board began our search, we've been focused on finding the very best candidate to lead HP forward. We wanted a strategic thinker with a passion for technology. We wanted someone with wide range in global experience and proven operational discipline. And most importantly, we wanted a leader who understands that HP's most important asset is its employees. We found all of these qualities and more in Lo.

- Lo Apotheker said that the decision to come to HP was an easy one and that no other company can match HPs market opportunity.  He added that great tech companies need innovation at the core and accountability around execution and delivering customer value.

Quotes from Lo:
For me the decision to accept the position was an easy one. I don't think there's another company in fact that can match HP's opportunity in the marketplace or HP's competitive advantages.

HP is investing in innovation but has a disciplined rigor to those investments that can perform over the short and long-term.

The senior leadership team here at HP is also incredibly talented, deep, and experienced. And they run the business with discipline and consistency, it's in their DNA.

I have a fundamental belief that great technology companies need innovation at the core and accountability around execution and delivering customer value.

I'm also looking forward to working with our new non-executive Chairman, Ray Lane, who I've known and worked with for almost 20 years. Ray's sharp strategic insight and exceptional industry perspective will be a huge asset to HP.

In response to a question about HPs software strategy:
If you want to talk about the strategy of HP, here are a few points that I would like to share with you.  I believe and the management team believesthat HP should be more valuable than the sum of its parts.  And in order to make that happen we all believe, and HP has a long standing commitment to that, that software is sort of glue to make that happen."

"Software is how we differentiate on our industry standard platforms, software is how can make sure that various parts of our technology actually fit well together.

It's not only software though.  Also higher value-added services are increasingly an important element in this strategy as well. So you should see us working on all of these elements.  We will continue to execute in the way we are executing.

HP has a great strategy and we will be focusing on all of our lines of businesses including our PCs, including our server business, including our networking business and of course including of our software business.

HP may now be looking outside for CEO

HP may now be looking outside for CEO

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) In giving an update on Hewlett-Packards search for a new chief at an analyst meeting earlier this week, acting CEO Cathie Lesjak said H-Ps board was looking at good internal candidates and good external candidates.
That has led some analysts to believe the pendulum at H-P (HPQ 42.56, +0.03, +0.06%) may lately have swung toward an external pick, as the search drags on two months after Mark Hurds abrupt exit that triggered the leadership crisis at the Silicon Valley giant. Earlier rumors had been pointing to an internal candidate among the companys top executive ranks. Read full story on internal candidates for H-P's CEO slot.
If they really liked one of the internal people, they would have already named them CEO, as that is an easy thing to do, Hapoalim analyst Kevin Hunt said in an e-mail interview.
The fact that they had the analyst day without a CEO tells me they must be seriously looking at some outsiders and havent been able to finalize anything yet, or getting them to leave their current position is complicated, he added.
The company could still turn to an outsider, he added, but it now seems more likely outside than inside, whereas it seemed the other way before.
Citigroups Richard Gardner offered a similar view in a note, saying, The absence of an announcement increases the likelihood that H-P is leaning towards an outside candidate.
Not necessarily, said Mel Connet, managing director at Heritage Search Partners, an executive search firm based in Menlo Park.
He said that while it may be true that H-P is leaning toward an internal candidate, it is also the boards fiduciary duty to consider external choices. That process of exploring outsiders takes time, he added, unless all those candidates just say, No.
Theres an even bigger reason for the H-P board to move cautiously, he added. Youve got a board here thats O-for-two. Theyve got to get this one right. Their fiduciary duty is to try to exercise the greatest caution.
Speed is important, he added. But getting it right is more important.
In any case, the speculated internal candidates were present at H-Ps analyst day to outline the tech giants plan for the coming year and beyond. Read full story on H-P's analyst meeting
They included Ann Livermore, head of HPs enterprise business, Todd Bradley, who is in charge of the PC business, Dave Donatelli, head of the storage, networking and enterprise servers business and VJ Joshi, head of H-Ps printing business.

Possible outsiders

That H-P might pick an outsider has not been totally discounted by many analysts.

Bloomberg: Hewlett-Packard Said to Be Near Decision on Hurd's Successor

Francisco De Jess September 20,2010

As we wrote this last week, there are 5 potential internal candidates for HP new CEO, the announcement will be done this week. The before post  you can read it on this link: 5 internal candidates for HP CEO :http://worldwidegadget.blogspot.com/2010/09/5-internal-candidates-for-next-hp-ceo.html

Bloomberg September 20,2010:

Hewlett-Packard Co.s board is nearing a decision on a successor to Mark Hurd as chief executive officer, and is leaning toward picking an internal candidate, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The short list includes Vyomesh Joshi, who runs HPs printer business; Todd Bradley, head of the personal-computer division; Dave Donatelli, who runs the storage and server unit; Tom Hogan, executive vice president of enterprise sales and marketing; and Ann Livermore, executive vice president of the enterprise business, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private and a choice hasnt been made.

Directors of HP, the worlds largest computer maker, met this week to weigh possible successors to Hurd, who left Aug. 6 after an investigation found he violated business-conduct standards. While it hasnt ruled out hiring from outside, HP may not be inclined to recruit from a rival, the person said. Hurd was hired from NCR Corp. and his predecessor, Carly Fiorina, came from Lucent Technologies Inc. and departed after the companys market value slid on her watch.

A decision on the new CEO could be announced in the coming week, the person said.
Hiring from within would also help HP avoid a legal tussle over agreements that bar executives from switching employers. Top managers at International Business Machines Corp., for example, are required to sign agreements that prohibit such moves. IBMs Steve Mills, who has experience in hardware and software, had been named by analysts as a potential candidate.
